Vancouver Island's great outdoors offers up the best of surfing, sailing, trail hiking (think of the famed West Coast Trail), fishing, kayaking, boating, white water river rafting, scuba diving, wind surfing, or even bungy jumping (for the daring).

Adventure time on Vancouver Island

Over the past decade, Victoria and other locations on Vancouver Island have become premier jumping off points for viewing the whales of the area. Resident pods (families) of orcas (killer whales) ply the waters between the islands and transient orcas compete with them for food. Grey whales and humpbacks frequent the island's waters on their migratory journey's. Other marine mammals (sea lions, seals, dolphins) and a diverse marine bird population are in abundance. The natural world is everywhere and close at hand on Vancouver Island.

Wildlife abounds at every turn...

Native peoples of Vancouver Island have a proud and long heritage and at several locations they share the secrets and traditions of that heritage in displays of art and performances of dance that tell the story of their past. The Royal BC Museum in Victoria is a good place to start but Duncan and Alert Bay further north on the island, among others, will engage your imagination of life before contact with European explorers.

Scenic backdrops of mountains, ocean and forests are just 'par for the course' when you golf on Vancouver Island. Opportunities abound in Greater Victoria – a dozen courses open year-round in Greater Victoria alone – and many more dot the island north from Victoria.

Golf is scenic, challenging and year-round
